“How Can I Prepare for My Cesarean Birth?”

As a Pre/postnatal Exercise Specialist at The Lotus Method, I get asked this question a lot. We know that not every client has a c-section in their birth plan, while some may be scheduled others might come as a surprise. It is my goal to help prepare you for anything.

FIRST STEP

BE AN ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF

Have  a conversation with your physician before going into surgery. Give them permission to take their time in closing you up! Your health and baby’s health is always top priority, but we also want that scar to be taken care of. We know that they will be cutting through seven layers of scar tissue to get to baby, the surface scar only makes up 10%! Allow the surgeon to take as much time and care when finishing the surgery to make sure your scar is as beautiful as it can be.

SECOND STEPS

POOP PREP

Yes I said it, bowel movement can be very intimidating after surgery! You want to make sure that you are setting yourself up for success prior to delivery.

  1. Stay hydrated!

  2. Eat Clean

  3. Ask for Stool Softener

  4. Get off Pain Meds ASAP

During recovery you won’t be maintaining your usual amount of daily activity, which means your gut mobility isn’t great. By staying hydrated and eating clean you are promoting an easier bowel movement. Pain meds are known for hardening stool, which can make things even more complicated. Don’t be afraid to ask for a stool softener to give yourself some extra support, and get off the pain meds as soon as possible!

meet your new best friend

If you haven’t caught on already…. we are kind of obsessed with our SQUATTY POTTY! In an ideal world, every bathroom would have one readily available, but we know that isn’t always the case. Don’t you fret, you can easily create some version of your own! A stool, step, side lying trash can, or partner if they allow, are all great substitutes. Basically anything that can elevate your knees above your pelvis should help to soften the pelvic floor, allowing you to relax and not bare down.

COMPRESSION

There are many different forms of compression available to mamas postpartum.  We do advocate for our clients to choose what is most comfortable for them. Compression helps to maintain swelling, which in turn will help to manage pain. Binders can be a lot of pressure both on the scar and pelvic floor, we suggest talking to your physician or pelvic floor physical therapist for their best recommendations. Make sure you bring some form of compression support in your hospital bag. Our recommendation is to wear it right away!

EXERCISE PREP

We hope these tips give you confidence and peace of mind going into surgery. Know that there is no “right way to give birth”! Every birth is beautiful and the top priority is always safety for both Mama and baby. Move your body, drink water, breath, and take care of yourself. YOU GOT THIS MAMA!

Why did you become a pre/ postnatal exercise specialist?

After working in a physical therapy clinic I very quickly became aware of how underserved the pre/
postnatal community was. Women who were trying to conceive, pregnant, and postpartum were
seeking out help and guidance in navigating their motherhood journey. The healthcare professionals
did not have the time or resources to be able to provide them the one-on-one attention they needed.
Being able to empower women and help support them through their journey is something that I could
only have dreamed of. The Lotus Method has allowed me to help women not feel alone through this
challenging time in their lives, and I love being able to continue supporting them!

What inspires you the most about our clientele of
    badass women?

Their priority to take care of themselves! Our clients run the world, from stay at home moms to CEO’s
these women’s schedules are packed! Yet they still prioritize taking the time to invest in themselves.
Literally running from a meeting straight into an exercise circuit is not uncommon for our mom’s. They
carve out an hour to focus on their strength, their mental health, and their happiness!

If you had to listen to one song on repeat for the
rest of your days – what would it be?

How can I just choose one! River by Leon Bridges or Ritual Union by Little Dragon.
